If youâre currently running Vista and want to upgrade to Windows 7, an in-place upgrade can be an easier option than a clean install. Here we will take a look a the steps to take before the upgrade and walk through the actual process of the upgrade.
Note: For this article we are upgrading Vista Home Premium 32-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
Before the Upgrade
Before starting the upgrade process there are a few things you need to do. The first thing you will want to make sure is that youâre connected to the Internet and running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 or higher. If you donât have at least SP1 you will get an error and have to go back and install it.
Upgrade Advisor
Where do space marines keep their ammo. Also youâll want to run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor which we previously covered. Make sure all of the hardware that you normally run is connected to the computer before running it so everything is checked. If your machine is already running Vista, chances are itâs going to run Windows 7 without a problem.
Compatibility Center
Go to Windows 7 Compatibility Center to find out what hardware and software Windows 7 currently supports. You can easily search or browse for your hardware to see if itâs Windows 7 compatible. If you have an older software version or hardware driver, they point you to the manufacturerâs website so you can upgrade to the right version for Windows 7.
The site also allows you to browse or search for software that is officially supported.
Backup Data
Backup all of your most important files, folders, and other data. Even though youâll still have all of your files after the upgrade, something could go wrong during the process and you could lose everything. Hopefully you have complete backups of your data already. If not, here are some backup solutions that weâve previously covered.
Free Backup Utilities
Internet
Make sure you are connected to the Internet so updates can be downloaded and installed during the upgrade process.

Begin Upgrade
When you pop in the Windows 7 disc, itâs going to give you the following options. If you already ran Upgrade Advisor, just ignore Check compatibility online Torrent brooklyn nine nine s06e08 full. because all it will do it point you to Upgrade Advisor anyway.
After you click Install now you will see the following message.
Remember before starting the process that youâre connected to the Internet because during this step youâll want to get the latest updates for the install.
Wait while the latest upgrades are found.
Agree to the software license terms.
At the type of installation screen, select Upgrade and not Custom. Custom would be used if youâre doing a clean install.
The upgrade process beginsâ¦
There will be about three or four reboots while the process completes.
After each reboot you should see different tasks on the list showing they have completed.
The last step will be Transferring Files, settings, and programs.
After the final reboot you will see the message that setup is checking video performance.
Type in your upgrade product keyâ¦

Then select if you want to turn on automatic updates.
Set up your time zone, time and date.
Select where your computer is located, which in our example is on a Home Network.
The desktop will be configured and you can start using Windows 7 with all of your files and most settings intact. Not everything will be exactly how it was in Vista, so allow yourself time to go through and make the appropriate tweaks.
Of course there will be differences such as no Windows Mail, Messenger, Photo Galleryâ¦etc. Make sure to download Microsoft Live Essentials to get your favorite MS apps back.
Make sure to run Windows Update right away after the upgrade to make sure everything is current.
Conclusion
If youâre lucky enough to have a version of Vista that allows an in-place upgrade, the process is relatively simple. The amount of time it takes will vary between systems. The system we used had an AMD Athlon dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM and it took about 45 minutes to complete the upgrade. Yours will probably take a lot longer though depending on the size of the hard drive and amount of data. The files and settings donât transfer over exactly how you had them before but itâs just a matter of tweaking them a bit. Overall an in-place upgrade is a relatively simple and effective process.

Hello, hope this is a good place to post this. I have been trying to upgrade my Sony Vaio Windows 7 laptop from Home Premium to Ultimate using a license-only upgrade key purchased off Amazon Uk.
This looked promising, because the supplier went out of their way to emphasise this was a legitimate boxed version (origin Ireland) and was brand new. At first, windows appeared to accept the upgrade key, but then came up with the message 'Installation not successful'.
It also threw up an error code (which I read online) is usually associated with Service pack 1 not being properly installed. However, this turned out to be a diversion, as my version of Home Premium already had SP1 pre-installed, so in fact there is nothing that can be done to un-install or re-install it. When I rebooted my computer, the option to enter an upgrade code under 'anytime upgrade' had suddenly disappeared and the only thing that came up in the search box from the Start menu was the title 'anytime upgrade no longer available.' Is there any way to make this work? I was aware that the fully online way to do an upgrade was no longer possible, but I thought if I purchased a legitimate upgrade key from a retailer, then this might work, as Microsoft still provided the box into which you can enter an upgrade key. Hope I'm making good sense here - a really frustrating situation!

Comments: Worth the investment and you will be happy to have upgraded.
Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Microsoft limits 20% of ISP download speed in Home Premium for some reason unknown to us meer motals. It is possible in Pro or Ult. to get around this very easy. Start task manager, new task and type in GPEDIT.MSC. Navigate to Administrative Templates, Network, and highlight Qos Packet Scheduler. Right click Limit reservable Bandwith and click on Edit. Click Enable and step the Bandwith Limit to '0'. Apply and reboot. I saw the improvement almost as soon as I did this.
Cons: Upgrade was easy ( Sorry newegg, I had purchased my upgrade at another retailer.) Only took 6 min., It took longer to read instructions. Works perfect. Accepts Windows up grades, validates for software downloads from Microsoft, and does everything it should, except for one bug. Every so often I get a nag screen telling me Windows will not activate. Tried reboots, Retyping in Key Code, etc. but Tells me that I need to buy a new Key. Guess I can live with this bug as long as everything else works.
Overall Review: I've installed three more keys to upgrade three more laptops. They haven't displayed the nag. I had another Tech. tell me the nag is because I had used Win 7 HP OEM on the computer with the bug but my laptops all came with Win7 HP form the factory.
Ownership: less than 1 day

Pros: Nice semi cheep way if you don' t="" like="" the="" security="" on="" pro="" and="" run="" xp="" apps="" and="" much="" much="" more.="">
Cons: The one feature it didn't not say (which is hard to find on MS web site and had to wiki it) it can use 2 CPU sockets on a single motherboard that supports it and pro does not. It's only for extreme benchmark programs or to run it as a public/private server. The motherboard and CPU's can be pricy but you will not have to upgrade the PC in years to come.
Overall Review: It would be kinda cool running two CPU's that have 6-8 cores making up to 12-16 cores in one PC with server quality DDR3 RAM going up to 36 gig+ and can support up to 192 gig's with quad SLI or 4 way crossfire but I don't think most benchmarks and games can support that many cores and cards though
Comments: Since they got this right, maybe they can find the time to work on the 80 digit product codes that go on stickers that invariably get stuck in hard to get to places and require a magnifying glass and flashlight to read. Just saying..
Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Allows me to run a few XP apps - main reason for buying the update. Running the Virtual feature is kind of slow, so I use it only in rare instances, when absolutely needed
Cons: Slow in using Vitual PC
Overall Review: MS should have provided the XP-use feature with all Windows 7. but apparently recognized a huge income source from demanding upgrades to Win7 Ultimate? Same old MS---
